You Wrote A Song !!

You wrote a song and now you want to get it out in the world. What do you do ?

You need to have a music distributor. There are a number you can choose from. I find the internet a very intense marketing game.

What I find is that each company creates a slightly different package of services trying to attract new customers.

My Old Distributor

For the last three years or so I have submitted my music to Distrokid.com . They are a low cost, budget distributor, that allow you to upload as much music as you want each year for a fee of about $35. U$ .

I was uploading almost a song each month for the last 3 years. But then they sell you extras like monetizing YouTube and other platforms for an additional yearly fee.

I did like their easy to submit online process, and they were set up to send many emails confirming each step of the approval process, up to the Release Day of your song or album.

Small Fees Add Up

I found that as I start to get a few albums out there, each year the fee for the add on services I have gets higher.

I’m 69 years old, and don’t know how many more years I have on this earth. But I would like my music to outlive me, and not have any ongoing costs the need to be paid.

It is for this reason that I decided to make a change to a distributor that could offer me this service.

New Distributor

I distributed my first album through Cdbaby.com . In 2020, they seemed to be one of the larger ones, and other musicians I knew suggested to use them. I released my Balance In Life album through them.

It was more costly at that time, but they offer a flat fee with no recurring charges.

Now they have lowered their fees, at least for now, which I feel is due to competition in their marketplace. The price at the moment is $10. U$ for a single song or an album.

Social Media Monetization

What I like about their service is that for this price they include Social Media Monetization. This is the pennies or portions of a penny that artists make when they music is used on the largest social media platforms. From the list below, you can see that there is a lot of collection work that goes on.

They have one add on called the CDBoost, which collects monies for you on the items shown below.

Pay Now Or Pay Later

My understanding is that this company takes a higher percentage of your earnings on some of the collections that are made on your behalf. So this is something that you need to consider too.

Submission Process

CDbaby has a more detailed submission process, with more screens to fill in. I don’t like their genre selection boxes. I’m still working to understand more on that.
